We’ve added safe places to Range, starting with the 16,536 public libraries located around the country.
Why libraries? Public libraries are free, open to all, and offer access to knowledge, to resources, and to solace when it is most needed. Libraries are vital community institutions, providing a safe place when other spaces may not be accessible.
Summer is drawing near, which means 45,000 summer meals sites are gearing up to serve youth free meals across the U.S. and territories. How can you help make sure youth get fed this summer? Here are some tips:
Understand the issue.
You don’t have to be an expert to know that kids are hungry. Those who receive free and reduced lunches during the school year need to find that same nutritious meal when school is out. The USDA’s Summer Food Services program serves free meals to youth under 18 in every state and territory. You can help make sure your community—your neighbors—know where to find free meals this summer.
Use tools to find meal sites in your area.
The more people who know about the summer meals program, the more youth will benefit from it. Free Internet and mobile apps exist to locate these sites in your neighborhood.
Find nearby meal sites, get directions, and share site information with others.
NOTE: sites are added or changed weekly to Range. If you don’t see sites in your area, check Range regularly.
2. WhyHunger: find food
Enter your ZIP code on an Internet-enabled computer or laptop to find meal locations.
3. No Kid Hungry: text message
Text FOOD to 877-877 to find a site near you.
Tell your community about the summer meals program. If you work with youth or with organizations that reach youth, use these outreach materials to tell them about free meal sites this summer.
1. Range: poster and messaging you can use to reach your community
2. WhyHunger: outreach materials
3. No Kid Hungry: act locally to fight child hunger
Site information is updated in Range weekly. Sites may change hours or may no longer be open, so please check Range often to be sure you have the most up to date information.
