In collaboration with Funky Citizens, a nonprofit organization in Romania, our team applied the Worker Connect platform to a new context: health workers in public hospitals. Funky Citizens focuses on transparency and corruption, and as the pandemic worsened, they observed heightened corruption in public hospitals overrun with Covid-19 cases. Caravan Studios and Funky Citizens collaborated to modify the platform and create De Gardă (“on call”), a mobile app that healthcare workers can use to report anonymously their issues and also learn about their rights and connect to local whistleblower resources in Romania. The issues workers report fuel advocacy campaigns and inform critical investigative pieces that Funky Citizens’ impressive network of journalists write to make public the dire situation that corruption creates, especially during a global pandemic.
